Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia

The Paestum Archaeological Park, a World Heritage Site, is an expression of Greek civilization in all its charm and richness.

When one thinks of Paestum, one must immediately have before one's eyes the image of a Greek city with its imposing buildings.

The city, founded as a colony by the Sybarites around 600 BC near the Sele river, reflects the two fundamental poles around which the life of the Greeks took place: the religious pole and the economic pole.

Ancient Poseidonia is one of the few archaeological sites where it is possible to admire and walk inside the majestic temples, considered among the greatest expressions of Magna Graecia architecture.

Other important testimonies of Greek culture are also kept inside the National Archaeological Museum of Paestum, located near the archaeological area. Among the finds preserved is the Tomb of the Diver, the only example of Greek painting in a non-vascular context.

Cilento

A myriad of colorful villages, guardians of ancient popular traditions, animate this territory, such as Agropoli, Palinuro, Camerota, Sapri, Ascea and Santa Maria di Castellabate. Its beaches are of enchanting beauty, often awarded with Blue Flags and Legambiente Sails: shores of fine golden sand alternate with more rocky and jagged stretches of coast, full of inlets, prehistoric caves and watchtowers to be discovered! Here, too, is the second largest park in Italy. Included in the Unesco World Heritage List in 1998, together with the Certosa di Padula and the archaeological area of Paestum, the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park includes the Bulgheria and Stella Mountains, and the peaks of Gelbison, Alburni and Cervati. Over 1800 species of spontaneous plants populate this area, in the company of a heterogeneous but at the same time harmonious fauna. But this land is also famous for the exceptional quality of its gastronomic products. In fact, it is here that the Mediterranean diet studied by Ancel Keys, an American physiologist and biologist who was the first to discover and document the benefits of a diet based on pasta, bread, always fresh fish, vegetables, legumes and olive oil was born.
